Planning a proposal is exciting — but keeping it a surprise? That’s where things can get tricky. From hiding the ring to keeping your cool, it can feel like your partner has a sixth sense for picking up on your plans. As a photographer, I’ve seen plenty of creative and thoughtful proposals, and I know how much the element of surprise matters. Here are some practical tips on how to keep your proposal a surprise (and make sure the moment feels unforgettable).
Don’t risk keeping the ring in obvious places like your sock drawer or car glove box. Instead, stash it in a spot your partner never looks — or even better, leave it with a trusted friend or family member until the big day.
The more elaborate the plan, the harder it is to keep a secret. Choose a plan that feels natural, whether it’s a casual walk at the USC Horseshoe or a sunset date at Lake Murray. If your partner doesn’t suspect anything unusual, the surprise will be even sweeter.
If your partner is suspicious, throw them off the trail with a decoy plan. Suggest a different day for dinner, or act like you’re planning something for a friend. Keeping their expectations elsewhere helps preserve the surprise.
Family and friends can help, but only if they’re good at keeping secrets. Choose just one or two people to help with logistics (like bringing flowers or setting up the space) instead of looping everyone in. The fewer people who know, the better.
This is the hardest part! Try not to act nervous or break your usual habits. If you always plan date nights, keep doing that. If you never make the dinner reservations, don’t suddenly start. Staying true to your normal rhythm will keep suspicion low.
One of the best ways to surprise your partner? Having the whole thing documented. I’ll hide in the background and capture every genuine reaction. Later, you’ll have photos that tell the story of one of your favorite memories.
Keeping a proposal a surprise takes a little creativity and a lot of patience, but it’s absolutely worth it when you see your partner’s reaction. Remember, the most important part isn’t pulling off a grand plan; it’s making sure the moment feels true to your story. And if you’d love to have it all captured discreetly, I’d be honored to help!
